Acetaminophen Lawsuits

Acetaminophen is one of the most popular over-the-counter pain medications in the world. Acetaminophen, is extremely prevalent in pharmacology and medicine. Millions of people use acetaminophen on a regular basis to relieve headaches, pain, and reduce fevers.

About 50 million Americans (roughly 20% of the adult population in the United States) use products containing acetaminophen every week, with more than 25 billion doses being used annually.

What may be surprising to consumers, however, is that acetaminophen is actually considered to be one of the least understood compounds in medical use. Scientists have yet to fully understand how acetaminophen relieves pain and reduces fever.

Despite the unknowns surrounding the drug, acetaminophen has long been marketed to pregnant women as the safest pain reliever and fever-reducing drug for use during pregnancy. As a result, acetaminophen is used by more pregnant women than any other over-the-counter drug.

Research has begun to show a correlation between pregnant women’s use of acetaminophen while pregnant and the development of neurological disorders like autism spectrum disorder (autism) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

What You Need to Know About Acetaminophen Lawsuits

Research has concluded that the children of women who took acetaminophen and other medications containing acetaminophen like NyQuil, DayQuil, or Excedrin, during pregnancy experienced elevated risks of autism. This research revealed a 20% higher risk of autism and a 30% higher risk of ADHD for children who had prolonged exposure to acetaminophen in the womb.

Based on this research, lawsuits are being filed claiming that the manufacturers, like Johnson & Johnson, failed to warn consumers of the risks associated with the drugs.

The disorders primarily reported in connection with acetaminophen use are autism and ADHD. As of August 2022, several lawsuits have been filed for autism diagnoses, and lawyers are still in the early stages of accepting cases and investigating these claims. A class action lawsuit is pending.

If you took acetaminophen while pregnant and your child was diagnosed with autism, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit. Get in touch with an attorney today to find out more.
