Study Finds Carcinogens in Common Weed Killer

A new study by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has found a link between the chemical glyphosate and a higher risk of developing cancer. Glyphosate is the main active ingredient in Roundup®, a popular weed killer that is used by farmers and home gardeners around the world. The IARC’s study found that people who are exposed to glyphosate are at an increased risk of developing Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph nodes. The study was based on a review of data from human studies, animal studies, and laboratory studies.

In 2015, the WHO’s IARC classified glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.” The IARC’s new study is likely to add fuel to the growing legal fire against Bayer, the makers of Roundup®. A U.S. District Court judge has already ruled that Roundup® labels must be changed to warn consumers about the potential risk of cancer associated with the product. Bayer is currently facing thousands of lawsuits in the United States from people whose cancer was caused by exposure to glyphosate, and about $11 billion has been paid out in settlements so far.

Early Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer that acts on the lymph nodes, can manifest in many different ways depending on what part of the body it has developed in. Common symptoms are as follows:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen or bloated abdomen
  • Pain or pressure in the chest, especially if accompanied by cough or shortness of breath
  • Chills, fatigue, or fever
  • Developing infections regularly

While these signs of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma will more often indicate an infection than cancer, it is vital to be evaluated by your doctor if they appear in order to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. This is especially true if you are part of an at-risk group, such as Roundup® users.

Roundup® Lawsuit FAQs

Is There a Statute of Limitations on Roundup® Cases?

The deadline for filing a Roundup® lawsuit will vary depending on the state where the affected individual lives.

Individuals may find out how long they have to pursue compensation in a Roundup® lawsuit by determining their state’s personal injury statute of limitations. This time limit begins at the date of diagnosis, and if you miss the deadline, you will not be able to seek compensation for your illness.
